Blog 8- Star theory Richard Dyer

Dyer believes artists are constructed through artificial images such as advertising, films, magazine and music.
Dyer says the the consumers prefer a "real" star who aren't manufactured.
A real artist can use it as their selling point.
Another one of Dyers beliefs within his Star Theory is that artists become trendsetters.

Band Profile

07-seven days is the potential band that we might choose as it would be simple to lip sync to. This song falls into the rock genre.
This is easy to lip sync to because the pace of their songs isn't too fast and it is also pretty easy to make a related video based on the lyrics.

These are pictures of the band from their unsigned.com profile.
Unfortunately as this band is very small and mostly unknown they dont have any videos that are available to share.
There bio reads Seven Days formed Feb. 2009. Started with a lead singer (Jeff) and guitarist (Jeremy). Sharing song writing ideas, realising that their style and ideas were a match and ideas started flowing. Later added a bass player (Matt) and drummer (Steve). "River of Sorrow"  their first studio cut has been met with great reviews. Seven Days is currently working on a demo album.  Although just getting started they are very excited to see the positive response from fans."

looking for an artist

When looking for an artist there are a number of things we have to consider, these include Copyright issues, genre and theme of the song.
Copyright- this is if a piece of music is owned by a record company you must first obtain permission to use the song. If we used a song without permission we could get sued for a lot of money, which we don't have.
We will not use certain genres of of music such as rap and country.
Rap- rap is hard to lip sync to as the lyrics are often fast paced and regularly contain explicit material.
Country music- Country music is hard to make a video for a country track  due to the area in which we live in. There is no empty farm landscapes for example.
The track we went for is by a dand called Seven days, their photographs are below.

blog 6: Key features

When watching a music video we are not given the whole story of what is going on, we are given parts and then from that we make up our own ideas of what is happening in the story.
An example of this is in will youngs song "Leave right now"
Here we are only given a rough idea of what is going on.
Amplify is also used here as we see Will doing the same actions throughout the video.
Repeatability should feature in many music videos however it has to be done in such a way that the audience doesn't lose interest.
Another music video that uses amplification is the song rather be by clean bandit, here you see shapes repeated throughput the song.

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) Dir. Bruce Gower.
The reason this Music Video is regarded as important is that it was the first Music Video to:
Really have an impact on sales – after the video release the song went to number 1.

Be regarded as a work of Art in its own right.

Blog 5: Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin in dancing in the distraction factory has identified the following features in music videos.
These key features include;
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics e.g. stage performances in metal videos and dance routine for a boy/girl band.
There is a relationship between lyrics and what is going on on screen (either illustrating, amplifying and contradicting).
The demands of the record label will include the need of lots of close ups of the singer , the artist may develop motifs e.g. Michael Jackson's frosted glove.
There are frequently references to the notion of looking and particularly voyueristic treatment of the female body.
Laura Mulvey had the theory of the male gaze.
